Kuki'o Beach — A Special Beginning
This trip to Kona will always be memorable and Kukiʻo Beach holds a very special place in my heart because this is where we got married.
After visiting the Big Island for so many years, this beautiful stretch of the Big Island felt like the perfect spot — beautiful, peaceful, and meaningful in a way that only Hawaiʻi can be to celebrate such an important moment.
Located along the Kona Coast, Kukiʻo offers a stunning mix of natural beauty: soft sand, palm trees, deep blue water, black lava rock formations, and wide Hawaiian skies. The sunsets here are unforgettable, especially when the golden light reflects against the lava rock and ocean waves.
One of the things I love about this area is the peaceful scenery around it. There is a paved path near the golf course and beach area, which makes it easy to walk and enjoy the views. On a clear day, you may even see the outline of other islands in the distance.

Access and Facilities
During our visit, public access was available through the gate. We paid the access fee, received a parking pass, and displayed it while parked in the designated public parking area.
Public parking spaces were limited. On a busy day, it may be difficult to find an available spot, although we did not have any issues during our visit.
Public restrooms were available, which made the visit more convenient.
Beach access, parking rules, fees, hours, and procedures may change, so it is best to verify current information before visiting.
Getting Married?
We planned and arranged everything while still in Vancouver, Washington. Based on our experience, these are the main lessons learned:
Visit the beach in advance.
Before the ceremony, visit the beach and choose the exact spot where you want to get married. Kukiʻo Beach offers different natural backgrounds, so seeing the area ahead of time helps you decide what works best for your ceremony and photos.
The path toward the beach is paved.
This was very helpful for us, especially on our wedding day. A paved path makes access easier when wearing wedding attire, carrying flowers, or walking with guests.
Get your marriage license in advance.
We completed the marriage license process online before traveling and picked it up at our hotel through [insert details/name]. This made the process much easier and avoided last-minute stress.
Need an officiant? Reserve one ahead of time.
We reserved [insert officiant name], and the ceremony was beautiful. Having someone arranged in advance gave us peace of mind and helped the day feel smooth and meaningful.
Professional Photographer.
This is a big one. If your ceremony or pictures are taken against the sun, proper lighting equipment is a must. Ask specifically whether the photographer has an external flash or the right setup for beach lighting and backlit photos.
In our case, we used but she did not have the equipment needed for the lighting conditions while the sun was still up. As a result, many of the photos did not come out well, and we had to pay a photographer back home to edit them.
- Tip: Before booking, ask to see examples of the photographer’s beach weddings taken during sunset or direct-sun conditions. Equipment and experience matter.
