Part 8: The Gift of Perspective

"Love, Culture, and Seeing the World Through New Eyes."

We married in 2023 in beautiful Kona, Hawaii, surrounded by the ocean, friends, sunshine, and the excitement of beginning a new chapter together.  I knew I was marrying someone I loved deeply. I knew life would be fuller, richer, and more meaningful with her by my side.

What I didn't fully realize at the time was just how much this relationship would expand my perspective on life, culture, and the experiences that continue shaping who we are.

Sharing life with someone from another culture has a way of opening your eyes. Slowly, almost without realizing it, you begin to see familiar things differently. Family means more than gathering around a table. Tradition becomes more than something you do once a year. Food carries memory. Language carries identity. Faith carries generations. Home becomes not just a place, but a feeling built across people, stories, and sacrifice.

Through Gladys, I have learned that culture is not something you simply observe from a distance. It is something lived. It is heard in the music playing in the kitchen, tasted in the food prepared with love, felt in the way family shows up for one another, and seen in the traditions that keep loved ones close, even after they are gone.

Her journey has also given me a much deeper appreciation for the courage it takes to begin again in a new country. I have seen the resilience, adaptability, determination, and faith required to build a life across borders. The American dream is not something that simply appears. It is built with one hard decision, one late night, one sacrifice, one confusing immigration form, and sometimes one very determined engineering student at a time.

And I have had a front-row seat to all of it.

Gladys has introduced me to new traditions, new foods, new celebrations, new ways of seeing family and community, and more Spanish vocabulary than my brain can always responsibly retain. Some lessons have been profound. Others have involved me confidently mispronouncing a word and immediately learning from the expression on her face that I had taken a wrong turn.

But that is part of the gift.

Love has a way of making the world larger. It invites you to listen more carefully, ask better questions, laugh at yourself, and understand that your way of seeing things is not the only way. Through her, I have gained a deeper appreciation for a culture different from my own, strengthened my respect for traditions beyond those I grew up with, and learned to see the world with greater curiosity and humility.

One simple message led to a marriage, a shared life, and a whole new way of seeing the world.
